Brand and model.
Consumers may prefer a more established brand. Usually, established brands command a higher price tag. But product and service quality is also expected to be of higher levels. It is fine to be loyal to a certain brand but do check if the model that you like comes at a reasonable price.
Display of internet phone.
The first generation of internet phones look exactly like an ordinary phone. You can punch in the numbers you want to dial, and use it just as you would for any other phone. However, the internet phone quickly evolved to include LED displays. LED displays allow the internet phone to display information such as duration of call or the caller's number. Such internet phones look like most office phones.
As the internet phone can be connected to the internet, the need for features soon pushed the development towards including a mini monitor. That is because additional features such as address books, answering facilities, etc. all require more screen space.
Design and appearance of phone.
In general, internet phones come in two designs. The first type of internet phone lays flat on the desk, just like an office phone. The second type of internet phone looks like a cordless phone. It can be placed standing up on a holder. The choice of design depends very much on individual preferences.
Price.
Besides branding, other factors such as features affect the overall price of an internet phone. Internet phone can range from two digit pricing to three digit price tags. Higher end models include support for most VoIP features.
Feature support.
This is perhaps, the most important factor to consider when buying an internet phone. Before making a purchase, always check with your carrier to see if they recommend any particular brand or model. Try to stick closely with the recommendations if you can. That's because if you buy a high end internet phone that supports many features, but your carrier (or your plan) do not offer this feature, then the support becomes useless. Vice versa, if your carrier offers many great features, but the phone that you bought does not support these features, it's all for nothing.
Fortunately, most modern internet phones offer support for basic features such as caller ID or call forwarding. Consider higher end models only if you need special features like integrated phone books or full color menu displays.
